Community College Transfer Planning Guides
Previous College Work
Binghamton University has built strong relationships with colleges throughout the state and region to facilitate the transfer of equivalent coursework. Courses are evaluated by school advisors and faculty for the transfer of credit and for fulfillment of major requirements.
Shortly after you are admitted, you will receive a detailed evaluation of your prior college work. At orientation, before registering for the semester, advising staff and faculty will work with you to map out a plan for selecting courses and completing your degree.
In order to graduate, all students must meet the General Education requirements set by the State University of New York. As a public research institution in the SUNY system, we accept all General Education credits already awarded at other SUNY colleges, and many courses also fulfill Gen Ed and degree requirements. (Some waivers are available for certain programs. Check with an academic advisor for details.)
Several majors have Community College Transfer Planning Guides that will assist you in planning a seamless curriculum between a SUNY or CUNY community college and Binghamton. Equivalent courses taken at other colleges usually fulfill a variety of requirements. Many pre-approved course equivalencies are also available in a searchable index.
While there are limits on the amount of credit and the type of credit that will transfer, generally all liberal arts and science credits from accredited institutions with a course grade of C- or better (C for Management and Human Development) are accepted for transfer. Credit from technical or applied courses may not transfer.
Students transferring from technical or applied programs and students changing their major program or career interest at Binghamton should pay particular attention to their remaining requirements.
To insure full consideration of all credit and course equivalency awards, you should submit prior to enrollment your official high school transcript, AP or IB test scores, and official transcripts from any college courses taken during high school (in addition to official college transcripts). If you would like further review of particular coursework at orientation, you may also want to bring the college catalog course description and syllabus from your previous college.
